How to play

One Tamil word. A little curiosity. A fresh start each day.

  1. Start with four letters

    You have six tries to find today’s Tamil word. Type one Tamil letter or Roman token in each box. Use Space or Tab to move along, then press Enter or Check word when all four boxes are filled.

  2. Try the Tamil keyboard

    Choose தமிழ் under Keyboard. Tap a consonant (Mei ezhuthu · மெய்யெழுத்து), then a vowel (Uyir ezhuthu · உயிரெழுத்து) to form a combined letter (Uyirmei ezhuthu · உயிர்மெய்யெழுத்து): க + இ becomes கி. Tap ஃ after a consonant key to add pulli; in an empty box it enters Aaytha ezhuthu (ஆய்த எழுத்து), ஃ. A new consonant key moves to the next box; use Space before a standalone vowel.

  3. Follow the colors

    Leaf means a letter is in the right place. Brass means it belongs somewhere else. Stone means it is absent, or you have used it more often than it appears in the answer.

  4. Let the spelling guide you

    Related consonants (Mei ezhuthugal · மெய்யெழுத்துகள்) such as ர் (r) and ற் (rr) are accepted, as are different vowels combined with the right consonant. We’ll show the answer’s exact letter with your original spelling crossed out just above it. The corner shows the corrected letter in the other script. Standalone vowels (Uyir ezhuthugal · உயிரெழுத்துகள்) need to match exactly.

  6. The letters in our word list

    Our word list focuses on Tamil letters. Words containing these Vada Mozhi / Grantha characters are excluded: ஸ்ரீ, க்ஷ, ஜ, ஶ, ஷ, ஸ, ஹ . This is a character-based filter; it does not identify the origin of every word written entirely in Tamil letters.

Tamil ↔ Roman typing guide

These are our typing tokens. A consonant (Mei ezhuthu · மெய்யெழுத்து) includes pulli: r = ர். Add a vowel (Uyir ezhuthu · உயிரெழுத்து) to make a combined letter (Uyirmei ezhuthu · உயிர்மெய்யெழுத்து): ra = ர, ri = ரி. Related consonants r / rr, n / nn / nnn, and l / ll / zh can match each other. A vowel change on a matching consonant is accepted too: ர can become ரி. We show the exact answer letter and cross out your original. Standalone அ and ஆ are different and must match exactly.

About this policy

This policy explains the information used when you visit Varthaigal, a Tamil daily word game. It describes the current version of the website. If we add features that change how information is handled, we will update this page.

Information used to deliver the website

Your browser sends technical information, including your IP address and request details, to our hosting and content-delivery providers when it loads the website or a puzzle. This is necessary to deliver the service. Varthaigal is hosted using Amazon Web Services, including CloudFront and S3. Providers may process technical information for service operation, security, and abuse prevention.

Timezone and daily puzzles

When the app requests a daily word, it includes an IANA timezone such as Asia/Kolkata in the request URL. The timezone can come from your browser or be supplied explicitly. It is used to select the puzzle for the relevant local day. This does not require GPS access or precise location permission.

Accounts, tracking, and device storage

The current app has no account registration and does not ask for your name, email address, or payment information. It does not include analytics, advertising trackers, or application cookies. Completed puzzles, their guesses and results, and your statistics are saved in local storage on this device. This lets us restore a completed board and calculate your guess distribution and streaks. Your theme, interface language, and keyboard preferences are also saved locally. Clearing the site’s stored data removes this history and these preferences. Your browser may cache website files as part of normal browsing. We also keep a versioned copy of the public word dictionary in your browser’s cache to avoid downloading it again. It contains no personal information; clearing site data removes this copy too.

Sharing is optional. The Share result button prepares a spoiler-free emoji result or image and opens your device’s share sheet when supported. Otherwise it offers result text through your clipboard or a manual copy. You choose where to share it. Those services apply their own privacy policies; the app does not post to your accounts automatically.

Sharing and retention

We do not sell personal information or share it for targeted advertising. Hosting providers process requests to deliver the website. We may disclose information if legally required or necessary to protect the service or the rights of others. Gameplay history is stored in your browser and is not uploaded by the app. Hosting providers may retain operational records under their own policies.

Your choices

You can stop using the website, clear its cached data through your browser, and avoid following external links. Privacy rights vary by location and may include access, correction, or deletion of personal information, subject to applicable law and the information actually held. This policy does not limit those rights.

Children and external websites

The current service does not request personal details from children or provide public profiles or messaging. Puzzle content may link to external websites. Their privacy practices are governed by their own policies, which you should review before providing information.

Changes

The date above identifies the latest revision. We will update this policy when our practices change and provide additional notice when required. No new data collection is authorized simply by the existence of this policy.
